The Rootdown can best be described as a hardtail that doesn't think it's a hardtail. It's a hardtail that will make you want to ride things that you'd normally ride on your big plush enduro bike with gobs of rear suspension travel. It's a bike that one of our very own Fanatik employee owns, and has proceeded to claim KOM's at our local riding destination Galbraith Mountain, which is no small feat considering the number of pro riders that ride these trails on their full blown $10,000 full suspension trail bikes on a regular basis!

There is something raw and rugged about shredding a hardtail. It's a back-to-the-basics approach to mountain biking, but with a twist of modern geometry including longer top tube, lower BB height, and slack head angle. This ain't no XC bike - it's an enduro bike minus the rear suspension, and it's a damn riot to ride.

Chromag aims to make the Rootdown a versatile bike. It can be built with either 27.5" or 29" wheels, with tire clearance up to 3.0" and 2.5" respectively. It is designed around a 160mm travel fork, but can accomodate 150mm and 170mm for those who want to go up or down in travel. The frame is constructed form a custom chromoly steel tubeset. The old adage "steel is real" still rings true today with the Rootdown. It's still a commonly used material for hardtail mountain bikes for several reasons, including excellent vibration absorption, and great strength to weight ratio. Chromag's "Yokel" design features a small machined junction towards the front of the chainstay that allow for ample tire and chainring clearance. At the other end of the rear triangle, Chromag has opted for Boost 12x148mm dropout spacing, which aids in providing a super short 16.3" chainstay length. Partner that with a 12.6" BB height, a 65° head angle and a 75° seat angle, and you've got a recipe for a wicked little trail-ripping hardtail.

Other features on the Rootdown include internal dropper post cable routing, ZS44/ZS56mm head tube, as well as CNC-machined dropouts, Yokel, and cable guides. The frame does not include a seatpost clamp, so we recommend purchasing one if needed. You may view the Accessories tab above for recommended post clamps.
