The Fox 40 Float was introduced in 2014 as Fox's first air-sprung downhill fork, dropping over a pound off the previous coil-sprung 40. Key points to the Float system are an adjustable air spring with a titanium coil-type negative spring and an air volume adjustment feature to control end-stroke spring rate. The negative spring system uses a long titanium coil spring and releases abruptly in the first fifteen percent of the forks travel. The linear rate of the titanium spring creates a buttery soft release of the air spring at fifty percent of the forks stroke. There are four different negative spring stiffness levels available for varying rider weights, and they are sold separately. Fox made some more improvements to the air spring, increasing sensitivity and reducing the weight by about 100 grams over the previous Float 40. Fox's Float system uses an air volume adjustment piston that sits below the left side top cap. This provides nine different air volume options for a more progressive spring rates. On the damper side, Fox has utilized their tried and true RC2 system with a few minor tweaks. Since the air spring can better resist bottoming, the hydraulic bottom-out function has been taken out of the new damper. The compression damping in the new system has been lightened as well due to the new spring system taking away much of the workload in the bottom half of the fork's stroke. The tried-and-true RC2 damper offers the most external adjustability, with separate high/low speed compression, and low speed rebound. For those who desire the highest level of tuning, the RC2 damper will provide just that. Overall suspension feel and responsiveness on Fox's RC2 forks will be the best Fox has to offer.
Fox employs a bolt-on 20mm axle on the 40-series forks for maximum rigidity. Magnesium lowers, aluminum top crowns, and an aluminum 1-1/8" steer tube keep weight down. As with all Factory Series Fox forks, the 40 Float utilizes Fox's famous Kashima buttery smooth coating on the stanchions. This fork is backed by Fox's limited 1-year warranty.
