The folks at Ibis have a great gig, but not without it's challenges. They all love riding bikes just as much as you or I, which means they strive to make bikes that they themselves want to ride day in and day out. That also poses quite the challenge. They build such fine bikes that it becomes a daunting task to improve upon the models they produce. When the Mojo HD3 was released, we were impressed with its well balanced suspension feel and capable demeanor. But we couldn't help feel that maybe it was just slightly too tame, that perhaps something meaner and wilder lurked underneath the surface. It seems the folks at Ibis felt the same, and decided to unleash the devilish creature that the HD3 could have been in another life. Enter the HD4, Ibis' latest masterpiece - a bike that is wildly slack, aggressive, and rowdy. This is a new direction for Ibis, one we haven't seen before, and we are beside ourselves with excitement. 

As if Ibis needed to prove themselves or their bikes, it is worthy to note that Ibis' sponsored Enduro World Series team climbed to the #1 ranked team right before the HD4 was released. Of course, this was all achieved on board the HD4, as the racers are always the lucky folks that get to ride the new bikes before the rest of us. Ranking #1 in the Enduro World Series is a pretty lofty achievement, seeing that the enduro segment of our sport has grown immensely, with nearly every bike company on the face of the earth vying for this position - many of which have racing team budgets 10 times that of Ibis. We love it when the underdog rises to the top, that's the kind of company we strive to support.

At first glance, the HD4 reminds us of the HD3 in terms of aesthetic appearance. Look a bit closer, and you'll notice the tubing on the frame has been shifted a bit, providing enough space for a water bottle on the inner main frame and a piggyback shock. Ibis has increased the reach length across all sizes, with 4mm added reach on the small clear up to 34mm added reach on the extra large. Head angle has been slackened to a very relaxed 64.9° - nearly 2° slacker than the HD3.  The seat tube has been shortened in overall length, while the bore depth has been increased to accommodate longer dropper posts. A re-engineered carbon layup and linkage provide much improved stiffness throughout the entire bike. The dw-link suspension platform has been refined and tweaked once again, with Dave Weagle and Ibis claiming it to be the most efficient iteration of the platform to date. Travel has been increased slightly to 153mm, and approved up to 170mm fork travel. All of this adds up to yee-freakin'-haw in our book...the gloves are off, and Ibis has brought an all-out destroyer to reality.

Tire clearance is a hot subject these days, so Ibis made sure to accommodate everyone - the HD4 has clearance for any tire up to 2.8". Ibis recommends the new crop of 2.6" tires from Maxxis and Schwalbe on the HD4, but of course, you can certainly run smaller tires if desired. It's also interesting to note that BB height stays about the same across tire sizes from 2.3" to 2.8". As you increase tire size, recommended tire pressure reduces which effectively provides more "tire sag", negating any increased BB height due to tire size. Other details on the HD4 include internal dropper and shifter cable routing, a polycarbonate downtube protector, removable ISCG '05 tab, and Boost 12x148mm rear dropout spacing.

As with all Ibis products, the HD4 is backed by Ibis' 7-year warranty.
