Now in it's third generation, the Ripley continues on it's successful path to trail bike nirvana. The Ripley LS keeps it's name, but features a couple important updates. As tires continue to evolve, we are seeing more and more options for sizing, including the all new Schwalbe and Maxxis 2.6". This not-quite-plus-sized tire seems to be gaining loyalty quick, and Ibis saw the need to allow riders this option on the Ripley LS, so as you can probably guess, the new Ripley LS is compatible with 29" tires up to 2.6". The Gen 3 frame also gets revamped main-pivot eccentrics. On the Generation 1 and 2 Ripley, Ibis maintained compatibility with the increasingly rare 3X chainrings. Maintaining that clearance meant they had to use a slightly narrower upper eccentric. Now that we have ultra wide ratio cassettes from Shimano and SRAM, Ibis decided that sacrificing 3X compatibility was a good trade off for increased stiffness of the rear end of the bike. The upper eccentric on the Gen 3 is now the same as the lower, gaining more stiffness in the process. Other than these changes, the Gen 3 Ripley LS shares the same geometry, travel, and main frame as the previous Ripley LS, but of course, it's available in a couple new sweet colors.
The Ripley LS (stands for Long / Slack) has won over the hearts of many mountain bikers out there, including a few of us here at Fanatik. We highly recommend checking out our review on the last Ripley LS, as much of it still pertains to the Gen 3 Ripley LS. It is simply a damn fine trail bike in nearly every regard. It is not a wildly aggressive 29'er with gobs of travel, so if you're looking for that, we recommend checking out the Evil Wreckoning. The Ripley LS is the trail bike that you can pedal for miles on end, and still have a blast on more technical descents. Toss a set of 2.6" tires on it, and you've got a 29'er with more traction than you'll know what to do with.
Other details of the Ripley LS include a threaded 73mm bottom bracket shell, ported internal cable routing, and 12x148mm Boost rear dropout spacing. The Ripley is backed by Ibis' lifetime no-fault warranty or 7 Years for defects in material/workmanship.
