Highlights
- Lightest Full-Suspension XC Frame Ever - The Epic 9 sets a new benchmark for weight without compromising stiffness, strength, or ride quality. Every gram removed serves performance, not just the scale.
- Updated Kinematics for Real Efficiency - Improved leverage at sag increases pedaling support while maintaining control through rough terrain. More power goes forward, less is wasted.
- 120mm Travel, Race-Tuned Capability - Modern XC demands more than ever. The Epic 9 keeps 120mm front and rear travel but delivers a more composed, confident ride at speed.
- Dynamic Trio Damping - Three distinct modes—Wide Open, Magic Middle, Sprint-On-Lock—give riders precise control over efficiency and suspension behavior. Magic Middle remains the go-to for balanced speed and control.
- Flip-Chip Adjustability - Fine-tune bottom bracket height and handling characteristics to match course conditions or rider preference.
- Integrated SWAT Storage - Frame-integrated storage adds practicality with effectively zero weight penalty.
- Weight - 7lbs 11.1 oz (fork included)
Description
The Specialized Epic 9 is a ground-up evolution of what a modern XC race bike can be, built with one goal in mind: eliminate anything that slows you down. Lighter weight, reduced friction, and smarter suspension all come together to create a bike that carries speed better than anything before it.
It starts with the frame. At just 1,589 grams (S-Works 12m frame), the Epic 9 is the lightest full-suspension XC frame ever made, achieved through obsessive refinement of every surface and structure. Using advanced FEA optimization and hundreds of micro-adjustments, Specialized removed weight without sacrificing stiffness, strength, or ride quality. The result is not just lighter, but faster in real terrain where efficiency actually matters.
That efficiency is system-wide. Epic 9 builds on the benchmark set by the previous generation, but pushes further with refined kinematics and 11% lower suspension friction. The updated suspension platform delivers a rare balance: firmer support under pedaling, increased traction on technical climbs, and a more composed feel when the course gets rough. It holds momentum through sections that typically sap speed, helping riders stay smooth and consistent when it counts most.
Travel remains at 120mm front and rear, but the ride feel is noticeably more controlled and capable. The updated leverage curve increases support at sag for better pedaling efficiency, while maintaining the proven progression through the mid-stroke and end-stroke to handle impacts and rough terrain with confidence.
The Dynamic Trio damping system carries over with three distinct modes—Wide Open, Magic Middle, and Sprint-On-Lock—but now works in harmony with the lower-friction chassis and updated suspension behavior. Magic Middle continues to stand out as the go-to setting, blending pedaling efficiency with active suspension that opens up when the trail demands it.
Geometry remains progressive, but more refined. Built on real-world Body Geometry fit data and racer feedback, the Epic 9 keeps its aggressive XC capability while improving rider positioning and control. Subtle updates to stack, reach, and bottom bracket height enhance stability and pedaling efficiency, while a flip-chip adjustment allows riders to fine-tune handling for different courses and conditions. Size-specific chainstay lengths further balance the ride across the size range.
What makes the Epic 9 stand out is not any single feature. It is how everything works together. Weight, kinematics, damping, and geometry are all developed as one system to maximize forward momentum. The result is a bike that feels less like equipment and more like an extension of the rider.
The Epic 9 is not just faster on paper. It is faster where it matters—on real XC courses, under real race pressure, where efficiency, control, and momentum decide the outcome.
